Journey to Oz – Day 6

24 July 2015

Another fantastic day. We crossed the Kennecott Glacier in bright sunshine and blue skies. Parts of the ice are covered by a layer of gravel and lose stone. Sometimes the blue ice is shining through just beneath it.

When we got to the section with the bare ice layer, we put on crampons – another new experience. I liked it, they make for a firm grip needed on the slippery terrain. Need though there challenges, many small hills to climb and descend and little creeks that we had to jump over. The creeks often get swallowed by the glacier in indefinitely deep holes called moulin. Luckily, a loud roar announces them as you would not want to fall into one of them!

Jason guided us elegantly and safely through the glacier, until we got to our last picturesque camping spot: next to a blue glacier lake, the white mountains as backdrop. Mount Blackburn again from a different perspective. The views are incredible and must be some of the best in the world, at least for somebody like me who loves the mountains.
