Today was a semi rest day. We hiked for about three hours, of which the first mile took about half of the time. We traversed along a fairly steep hill and crossed the glacier creek twice. The water is much more ferocious than it looks and so cold. I am glad we don’t have to wade through any more.
We camped in front of the Hidden Lake. A very appropriate name as there is no lake left at this time of the year. At some point on summer, the natural ice dam melts and the lake empties out. The rafters then ride the surge that comes from it further down the river. Now all that remains of the lake is the large icebergs. It’s an eerie site, a bit like an exposed underworld. Now and again there is a thunder-like noise when a piece crushes down from an iceberg.
We go to our tents early as it is raining. Time to continue reading Jack London’s White Fang. I enjoy it but not as much as Call of the Wild though. I am glad Jason made me a hot water bottle as it is cold and my feet are freezing.
